Over 40 and Struggling? Discover the Hidden Ways You Might Be Sabotaging Your Menopause and Weight Loss Goals!
Jodie Studley. Per/Menopause and Weight Loss (2024)
Introduction:
As a Naturopath specialising in Peri/menopause and Weight Loss, I’ve worked with many women over 40 who are eager to tackle their menopausal symptoms naturally and maintain their ideal weight. Despite their dedication, some find themselves stuck, not due to lack of effort, but because of unintended self-sabotage. In this post, we’ll explore the hidden ways you might be hindering your progress and potentially worsening your symptoms!
This may not be an intentional sabotage; however the impact is still real!
Here are some common pitfalls I see among women over 40:
1. Underestimating the Impact of Stress
Stress management is crucial for balancing hormones and maintaining a healthy weight, yet many women tend to overlook it. Ignoring stress can lead to more intense hot flashes, increased belly fat, anxiety, insomnia, and hinder your weight loss goals.
To calm your mind and body, try:
Taking deep belly breaths whenever you can.
Spending time in nature, even if it’s just in your backyard or looking out a window at trees.
Engaging in activities that bring you joy.
Spending quality time with friends, family, and pets.
Moving your body in a mindful way.
2. Sticking to Old Habits
Ladies, your body undergoes significant hormonal changes after 40. I often hear, “I’m doing the same things I’ve always done to lose weight/improve mood/sleep/energy, but it’s not working anymore!” It’s time to rethink your approach to food, exercise, and lifestyle. By adapting to your body's new needs, you can achieve glowing skin, boundless energy, symptom relief, and healthy weight loss without confusion or frustration.
The sooner you make these changes, the better you’ll feel and the more you’ll enjoy life.
3. Neglecting Self-Care
I often hear women say ... I'll start when I have time ... I'm too busy right now ... I don't have time to look after myself!
Many women over 40 put everyone else first, neglecting their own needs. Remember, you need to “put on your own oxygen mask first.” Viewing self-care as a luxury rather than a necessity can harm your mental and physical well-being. Waiting until you’re at breaking point makes the journey back to feeling like yourself much longer.
Incorporate daily self-care routines such as:
Using positive affirmations. Try looking in the mirror, placing your hand on your heart, and saying “I love and accept myself” three times while making eye contact.
Eating nourishing whole foods and savoring quality dark chocolate.
Enjoying a face mask while listening to your favorite podcast (like The Ageless and Awesome Podcast!).
Relaxing in a bath with essential oils and magnesium salts by candlelight.
4. Falling for Fad Diets
The internet is filled with short term gain. It’s tempting to try fad diets, especially when they’re popular among friends. However, following extreme diets like 1200 cal/day plans, keto, fasting, or juice detoxes without proper guidance can be detrimental. These diets often neglect your unique medical conditions, hormone status, relationship with food, and overall health goals, leading to nutrient deficiencies and a yo-yo effect of weight loss and gain.
To avoid this, do your own research and ask questions such as:
How will this support my hormone health?
What does my own body require to balance?
Is this tailored to me as an individual?
How will this work for me long-term?
5. Accepting Hormone Symptoms and Weight Gain as Inevitable
There’s so much you can do to alleviate perimenopause and menopause symptoms, enhance your quality of life, feeling happy as you age, and reach your ideal weight. My recommendations do not involve long-term use of expensive supplements, meal replacements, starvation diets, or extreme exercise routines.
I hope this sheds light on what might be holding you back from feeling like yourself again. Do any of these resonate with you?
